Reducing the impact on the environment

By establishing the best balance between efficient operations, introduction of occupational safety standards and economic development, we strive every day to minimize environmental impact in all aspects of our operations. By continuously identifying and assessing environmental risks, we plan and implement a number of projects that help us gradually reduce the impact of production processes. Our goal is to restore and return the areas disturbed by open pit mining throughout the Chiatura municipality to its original state, to solve the problem of pollution of the river Kvirila and to eliminate the issue of air pollution in the municipality of Zestafoni.

Environmental protection projects

Technical and biological recultivation
In order to restore unsystematically disturbed soils due to the peculiarities of mining, technical and biological recultivation works are actively being carried out throughout the municipality of Chiatura.
Technical recultivation is a component of restoration works, within the framework of which we correct and prepare the disturbed area for biological reclamation, the purpose of which is to match and stabilize the developed area with the existing landscape elements.
Biological recultivation includes agrotechnical, phyto-melioration and other complex measures aimed at restoring the agricultural productivity of the land. In particular, as a result of biological reclamation, the land returns to its original appearance or close to it, and it becomes possible to use it for agricultural purposes.
As part of the recultivation works, which we are carrying out in accordance with the legislation, we have already technically restored 108.2152 hectares and biologically recultivated 23.22 hectares.
New enrichment plant
One of the ecological challenges in the Chiatura region is the pollution of the Kvirila River, which is caused by the discharge of polluted water into the river as a result of manganese enrichment.
We have implemented several important projects to address this challenge. We started by shutting down depreciated factories owned by the company and built a new plant of German standard, using modern technologies.
The new enrichment plant works in a closed cycle, therefore, the water needed in the enrichment process also moves in a closed cycle and returns to the production cycle as a result of cleaning. As a result, neither polluted nor purified water flows into the Kvirila river at all.
Of the old factories, only the 29th factory remained in operation, which underwent a complete technological overhaul and water purification filters have been installed.
River Kvirila without sludge
In December 2022, in Georgia, we started the implementation of an unprecedented environmental project and the clean-up of the Kvirila River from sludge accumulated over decades.
Within the framework of the first stage of the project, approximately 60,000 m³ of sludge has been removed from the river bed and placed in a special, protected area. Sludges removed from the river in the mentioned area will be stored in compliance with the relevant rules until the completion of the project. In the future, it will be possible to use it in reclaimed areas to enrich the soil.
In order to prevent pollution related to the transportation of the sludge removed from the bed during the works, the Chiatura cleaning service was working uninterruptedly.
The project of cleaning the river from sludge was developed by highly qualified foreign specialists with the help of heavy equipment and manpower.
Permanent installation and renewal of air and water filters
Air pollution was the main environmental challenge for the Zestafoni ferroalloys plant and the main sources of pollution are the so-called organized and unorganized emission sources.
In order to minimize the organized emissions, we started installing and renewing the filters of the gas cleaning system on a permanent basis, which completely solved the problem of air pollution from the sources of organized emissions.
As for the sources of unorganized emission, in order to collect the dust generated at the moment of release, the process of closing the furnaces was carried out and an aspiration system was installed, as a result of which it was possible to collect the generated dust and include it in the unified gas cleaning system. 
Railway terminal
We have organized a new railway terminal in Chiatura, thereby solving the problems related to the transportation of concentrates in the city: heavy vehicles will no longer move in the city, which has relieved the connecting road of Chiatura - Zestafoni. Heavy vehicles no longer damage the central part of the road. Problems with dust and exhaust gases that was caused when pumping concentrates have been eliminated.
Ore transportation with the equipment of enclosed body

In Chiatura, in densely populated areas, the transportation of ore caused its dusting, which was one of the main sources of air pollution in the region. In order to solve this problem, we established a new practice, according to which the transportation of ore is allowed only by the equipment of an enclosed body.

Auto washes for specialty vehicles
Among the projects implemented to prevent dusting, it is worth noting the issue of arranging auto washes for specialty vehicles. We have installed special auto washes at the entrances of the quarries in the Chiatura region for the purpose of washing and cleaning the quarry machinery. In particular, in 12 places, the automatic auto washes for specialty vehicles work properly, as a result of which all the specialty vehicles moving from the ground to the asphalt road are clean. Consequently, the asphalt road surface is no longer polluted. 
Permanent cleaning in Chiatura and Zestafoni
On May 29, 2019, we started a permanent large-scale city cleaning campaign in Chiatura and Zestafoni. The process of cleaning the city started from the bridge of the Jruchula River in the direction of the city. The cleaning actively continues to this day, both the company's employees and the special equipment purchased for this project are involved in it. Especially for this project, the company purchased 8 units of special road-washing machinery, which have been equally distributed in Zestafoni and Chiatura.
In Chiatura and Zestafoni, greening campaigns are permanently underway. Since 2017, about 10,000 trees have been planted in both cities. As part of the project, we have greened the yard of many schools and preschools across municipalities. We have organized recreational spaces and windbreaks.
